Dans ce contexte trouble, quatre femmes cherchent à échapper à leur destin. Munis tente de s’engager politiquement malgré l’interdiction de son frère, religieux orthodoxe qui espère la marier. Faezeh, sa meilleure amie, nourrit pour ce dernier un amour secret. Zarin, une jeune prostituée, s’enfuit de son bordel. Et Fakhri, une femme d’âge mûr et épouse d’un militaire de haut rang, est en butte aux humiliations que lui inflige son mari. Toutes quatre chercheront refuge dans un verger merveilleux, aux portes de la ville.
